Now in its 28th season , Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company continues to hold its place at theatre’s leading edge. Woolly Mammoth is acknowledged as “WASHINGTON’S MOST DARING THEATRE COMPANY” (The New York Times), as a regional and national leader in the development of new plays, and as one of the best known and most influential theatres in America. Woolly Mammoth has gained this reputation by holding fast to its unique mission:

. . . to ignite an explosive engagement between theatre artists and the community by developing, producing and promoting new plays that explore the edges of theatrical style and human experience, and by implementing new ways to use the artistry of theatre to serve the people of Greater Washington, DC.

Plays premiered at Woolly Mammoth have won major national awards and have been produced at well over two hundred other theatres across America and around the world. The theatre has played a catalytic role in the careers of many of our nation’s most provocative playwrights including Craig Wright, Sarah Ruhl, Amy Freed, Robert Alexander, Nicky Silver, Doug Wright, Oni Faida Lampley, among others, and has launched the careers of some of Washington’s finest actors, including members of Woolly’s renowned acting company.

Woolly Mammoth has received more than 130 Helen Hayes Award nominations for its productions and 24 Helen Hayes Awards, including six Charles MacArthur Awards for Outstanding New Play. The Outside Woolly program has been honored with the Washington Post Award for Outstanding Community Service, and Woolly Mammoth has twice received the Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence.

Woolly Mammoth is a member of the National New Play Network, Theatre Communications Group, The League of Washington Theatres and The Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington. The Theatre’s programs are supported by The National Endowment for the Arts, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the National Capital Arts and Cultural Affairs Program/United States Commission of Fine Arts.
