The Art of PlaymakingWoolly Mammoth Theatre Company annually presents The Art of Playmaking, an ambitious endeavor to bring the power of playwriting to over 100 young people of Washington, DC. In The Art of Playmaking, a selection of DC’s most creative elementary, junior high and high school playwrights have their scripts performed by local professional actors for audiences to hear the work of up and coming writers. In this continually exciting project, now in its ninth year as part of Woolly Mammoth's education and outreach programming, the art of writing plays is taught to elementary, junior high and high school students at four DC public schools over the course of the school year. The top original short plays are then chosen from among those written by the 130 participating students and are presented in free public readings by professional actors. In past years, Woolly Mammoth has worked with students at DC’s Anne Beers Elementary School, Ballou Senior High School, Hine Junior High School and St. Francis Xavier Catholic School. “The Art of Playmaking really gives young people an artistic platform,” says Tom Prewitt, past Associate Artistic Director. “The tremendous insight and creativity of these plays are the reason we continue to work with the incredibly talented students in DC. We want to reach as many young people as possible with the power of theater and playwriting.” Now accepting applications!Woolly's Education Department is now accepting applications for the 2008–2009 Fall and Spring sessions of The Art of Playmaking.
