Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company - Defy convention Education & Outreach

Outside Woolly

Woolly Mammoth’s award-winning Education and Outreach program has been a pioneer in using theatre to reach out to the broader Washington community. Founded in 1991, the program has served over 1,000 DC youth and adults through theatre workshops and playwriting classes that build literacy and self-esteem. Woolly has partnered with over 35 schools, community centers, social service and arts organizations to develop and present Community Playbuilding Projects telling the distinct and diverse stories emerging from DC’s neighborhoods. In addition, Woolly Mammoth offers theatre training through classes in The Workshop taught by some of the area’s most dynamic professional actors and directors; supports PlayGround, a small, diverse group of local playwrights who work together to develop and present their work in free public readings; and participates in WOOLLY/UM, a unique partnership with the University of Maryland Department of Theatre that allows students to work with professionals through master classes, mentoring relationships and “blended” productions including both student and professional actors.
