Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company is looking for the next generation of creative, dedicated, and highly innovative theatre artists and administrators, poised to jump-start their careers.

Woolly’s season-long Internships are designed for recent college graduates and early-career professionals seeking greater understanding and deeper knowledge of artistic, production, or administrative areas of a professional theatre company. These positions typically run July/August to June/July of the following year.
Please note: Woolly no longer offers summer internships.
As an Intern at Woolly Mammoth, you will…
- Work intimately with Woolly’s leadership, senior staff, and members of your department or area
- Work independently and collaboratively with your departmental colleagues on short- and long-term projects
- Interact with Woolly staff, board, and visiting artists, as well as members of the dynamic theatre community in the DC-metropolitan area
- Have your own email address, phone line, and work station
- Attend Intern seminars to learn about the various roles of Woolly staff members
- Attend company meetings
- Receive free tickets to all Woolly Mammoth productions
- Attend special events at Woolly Mammoth including opening and closing night parties as well as the annual benefit
- Have the opportunity to attend rehearsals of Woolly productions
Season-Long Interns receive a $200/month travel stipend. Housing is not provided.

Woolly is not responsible for formatting errors or incomplete applications. Applications received in hardcopy via mail or fax will not be accepted (but will be recycled).

4. If applying for one of the following internships, please include an analytical writing sample: Artistic Director, Managing Director, Literary, and Development. This sample should not be a piece of creative writing. Do not submit a work of fiction or a script.
5. If applying for the “Literary Assistant” internship, please include two letters of recommendation (employers, professors, etc). Letters of recommendation are only required for Literary Assistant candidates. Letters of recommendation must be received in electronic format with the rest of your application packet.

Internship Position Overviews

Assistant to the Artistic Director
Supervisor: Howard Shalwitz, Artistic Director
Secondary Supervisor: Miriam Weisfeld, Director of Artistic Development
As Assistant to the Artistic Director, this intern is exposed to all areas of artistic administration including season planning, new play development, and organizing special events and workshops in addition to general administrative tasks. You work closely with Artistic Director Howard Shalwitz to help with his schedule and daily needs around the office. Attendance at Board, Development, and design meetings is encouraged. This position requires strong organizational and communication skills.
Connectivity Assistant
Supervisor: Connectivity Director
This intern works intimately with Woolly’s innovative Connectivity Department to develop and implement a sweep of activities around each production designed to engage all of Woolly’s various constituencies (staff, artists, Board, Claque, audience, etc) more deeply in the work of the theatre. Among other responsibilities, the intern assists the Connectivity Director in developing “Audience Design” for Woolly productions, building relationships with community stakeholders, and shaping the lobby environment for each show. In addition, the intern plays an important role in coordinating Woolly Mammoth’s Internship program. Some day-to-day clerical and administrative tasks should be expected. This internship requires strong organizational and communication skills, as well as a belief in the powerful impact of theatre and the potential creative capacity of theatre audiences. The ideal candidate will also have a sense of humor and a healthy imagination.
Development Assistant
Supervisor: Sarah Dovere, Development Director
As an integral member of the Development Department, this intern aids the daily process of fund-raising for a not-for-profit institution. During office hours, the intern will assist with donor research and database maintenance, routine clerical projects (including mass mailings and gift acknowledgment letters), and preparations for Board and Committee meetings. The internship will also focus on assisting with Opening Nights, benefits, and other special events. This position requires good communication skills, the ability to skillfully handle sensitive material, a good ability to multi-task, and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
Directing Intern
Directing Interns serve as the Assistant to the Director on a Woolly production. The internship provides a unique, intimate opportunity for early-career directors to follow a professional director through the process of mounting a production at a regional theatre. The duration of each internship will vary from four weeks to six months based on the needs of the director and the production calendar; however, candidates should expect to work full time during the rehearsal process (approximately eight hours a day, six days a week). The scope of the position and specific responsibilities will be determined by the director the intern is assigned to, in consultation with Woolly’s Intern Coordinator and Production Manager. Applications for this internship are accepted on an on-going basis, and interviews and placement are made as the need arrives. This position is designed for early-career directors; current undergraduates are not encouraged to apply as significant scheduling conflicts are likely to arise.
Assistant to the Director of Finance and Administration
Supervisor: Allyson Quirico, Director of Finance & Administration
Secondary Supervisor: Paul Kappel, Operations Manager
Focusing on gaining experience in general management, accounts payable, budget analysis and monitoring, building maintenance, rentals, and rental contracts. The position of Assistant to the Director of Finance and Administration offers a tremendous opportunity for those interested in theatre administration and management. This internship provides an opportunity to gain experience in budget preparation and tracking, accounts payable and its associated software, payroll, financial reporting, contract drafting, and other essential tasks as they arise. This position requires good communication skills, the ability to skillfully handle sensitive and private information, a good ability to multi-task, familiarity with Microsoft Office, and strong organizational and communication skills. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to a career in theatre management.
Lighting Intern
The Lighting Internship is a unique intensive experience that provides the opportunity to work hands-on with Woolly's award-winning Resident Lighting Designer in a professional setting. The internship will include execution of the light hang and focus as part of the electrics crew, projects with the Master Electrician specific to the production, serving as the Designer's assistant during Tech and Previews, light board programming, and assisting the Master Electrician with lighting paperwork. The Lighting Internship can be a singular experience or a series of productions throughout the season; dates and availability to be discussed during the interview process. Recent graduates and undergraduates in their final year with flexible schedules are encouraged to apply.
Literary Assistant
Supervisor: John Baker, Literary Manager
Secondary Supervisor: Miriam Weisfeld, Director of Artistic Development
The Literary Internship offers the opportunity to be immersed in the literary office of a major new play theatre.The Literary Assistant is exposed to the season planning, new play development, and production dramaturgy processes. The Assistant helps with maintaining databases, organizing and implementing the flow of scripts through the department, reading scripts, writing reports, updating literary calendars, and participating in season planning meetings with Woolly ’s script readers and artistic leadership. The intern typically works as an assistant dramaturg on one or more Woolly productions, compiling actor packets and secondary research materials, maintaining research blogs, tracking script changes, etc. As an assistant dramaturg, the intern may have the opportunity to attend developmental readings, design meetings, and rehearsals, as appropriate. A familiarity with classic and contemporary plays and devising companies is useful. Strong writing, computer, and organizational skills are essential.
Assistant to the Managing Director
Supervisor: Jeffrey Herrmann, Managing Director
With a focus on gaining experience in theatre management, the position of the Assistant to the Managing Director offers a tremendous opportunity for those interested in theatre administration. While staffing the Managing Director, this position provides an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge and experience in a variety of administrative areas, including: human resources, finances and budgeting, facilities management, board relations, fundraising and grants, corporate and foundation research, contracts, and the day-to-day activities necessary to manage a mid-sized, non-profit theatre. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to a career in theatre management.
Marketing Assistant, Communications
Supervisor: Deeksha Gaur, Director of Marketing & Public Relations
Secondary Supervisor: Brooke Miller, Press & Digital Content Manager
The Marketing Assistant, Communications will provide general support to the Marketing and Communications Department with a specific focus on electronic communications and press. The Assistant will support the Director of Marketing and Public Relations and the Press and Digital Content Manager in day-to-day tasks such as maintaining communications lists, coordinating press tickets and requests, maintaining Woolly’s press archives, creating and managing communications reports, assisting with production of programs, scripts, and other show related communications, maintaining internal communications calendars, assisting with the theatre’s social media efforts, acting as a staff writer for the Woolly Blog and contributor to Radio Woolly, and other duties as assigned.
Marketing Assistant, Sales and Box Office
Primary Supervisor: Zacory Boatright, Director of Business Development
Secondary Supervisor: Deeksha Gaur, Director of Marketing & Public Relations
The Marketing Assistant, Sales and Box Office will provide general support to the Marketing and Communications Department with a specific focus on group sales, advertising, rentals, and general business development. The Assistant will support the Director of Business Development in day-to-day tasks such as the creation and management of daily sales reports, the maintenance of sales sheets and collateral materials, the creation of invoices and contracts for rental customers, and database management. The Assistant will also act as a backup to the Box Office during peak times, and be the on-site point-person for group sales and rental customers when the Director of Business Develpment is out of the office.
Production Manager Assistant
Supervisor: Taryn Staples, Production Manager
The Production Manager Assistant assists the Production Manager in all areas, including budgeting, scheduling, and coordinating the technical aspect of all Woolly Mammoth productions, workshops, and special events. The intern will be responsible for maintaining both show and casting files, scheduling and monitoring auditions. The Assistant will be responsible for coordinating travel and accommodation arrangements for visiting artists. In addition, the intern will be expected to attend all staff and production meetings and assist with the routine tasks of every day operations. Good communication skills and a sense of humor are essential for this position. Must be 21 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license.
Properties Intern
Supervisor: Jennifer Sheetz, Properties Master
The Properties Intern at Woolly assists in the acquisition, build, and maintenance of all props used in Woolly Mammoth’s productions. Interns will alternate working intimately with the Properties Master in the shopping or crafting of props, and serving as the props runner as part of each show’s crew under the supervision of the Stage Manager. Candidates should have prior experience in both hard- and soft-goods with basic knowledge and skill level in hand and power tools, painting, and sewing. For candidates interested in design areas, it is possible to attend production meetings with designers and directors for exposure to the artistic development process.
Technical Intern
Supervisors: Scott Little, Technical Director;
Brian McVicker, Assistant Technical Director
The Technical Internship allows for a full understanding of how the production areas and technical staff come together to create a production. Throughout the season, there will be opportunities to become involved in different production departments. Interns work intimately with the Technical Director and scene shop staff on the construction, finishing, and installation of scenery. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to: wood work, scenic painting, steel work and welding, foam work, and plastics. Technical Interns will also participate in electrics calls on occasion, including hang, focus, and maintenance. For candidates interested in design areas, it is possible to attend production meetings with designers and directors for exposure to the artistic development process.
