on the washington football team

Woolly Mammoth is deeply invested in our home city and is proud of DC’s cultural heritage. On a concrete wall in our lobby is a statement that acknowledges that our building sits on the land of the Nacotchtank whose descendants belong to the Piscataway peoples, reminding us to honor the history of this unceded territory. With the news of the Washington football team changing its name, we celebrate alongside Native people both locally and nationally.

The media is crediting the actions of major sponsors for this change, but we feel it’s important to lift up the names of the many activists who have been working to make this happen for years. They include Amanda Blackhorse, Suzan Shown Harjo, Crystal Echo Hawk, Sebi Medina-Tayac, Charlene Teters and many others. We thank you for pushing this shift forward and applaud this historic moment with you.

We also recognize that further action and accountability - on our part, and our city’s - are required in moving ever closer to our collective liberation.
