Invocation Exhibition

By Rashad Ali Muhammad

Invocation honors the quiet wisdom my ancestors preserved through disruption. It’s a call to remember, to reconnect, and to draw strength from the unseen forces that continue to guide us toward healing and self-realization.

Youth Pride Wishing Tree

By Dwayne Lawson-Brown, aka the Crochet Kingpin

An extension of the “Chocolate City Wishing Tree” first sown during ChocolateCON 2024, the Youth Pride Wishing Tree is an interactive art exhibit designed by Dwayne Lawson-Brown. Incorporating a synthetic tree base, crocheted panels and blossoms, and the colors on the DC flag and Pride Flag; the “wishing tree” has been crafted to receive your wishes and blossom a city of our dreams.

Attendees of the SMYAL Youth Conference were invited to write their wishes for our city and community and join Dwayne on Saturday May 31st to crochet blossoms and attach them to the wishing tree.

“The energy surrounding the PRIDE PLAYS festival is electric! The chance to bring it to DC, and have our local artists involved as well was too exciting to pass up. While talking about the project, I was told how important [‘now more than ever’] this was to DC. To me, it is ALWAYS a great idea to uplift the broad range of voices creating theatre by and for the LGBT+ community. Surrounding us is a community that’s rich, deep, entertaining, part of the history of this country and part of our ongoing lives. It’s not just now. It’s always.”
