WORLD PREMIERES

World premieres make up a significant percentage of the plays we produce; the remainder generally consists of plays receiving their second or third productions, giving playwrights and generative artists a further opportunity to hone their work.

New plays premiered at Woolly Mammoth have been produced from New York to London to Helsinki, in more than 250 theatres all over the world. Woolly plays have gone on to extended runs Off-Broadway and productions at a wide variety of regional theatres (both large and very small) and have been produced at colleges and universities across the country.

WEISSBERG COMMISSIONS

In April 2022, the Weissberg Foundation chose Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company for a grant to honor the late Marvin Weissberg, tremendous philanthropist and theatre lover. The resulting Weissberg Commissions Project is the theatre’s first dedicated commissioning program.

Commissions under this new program range from $5,000 to $25,000 per project and fund completely new full-length plays, the testing of new ideas, or give artists the opportunity to finish incomplete works. The Weissberg Commissions are given to writers, directors, designers, choreographers, or other generative artists who represent artistic innovation in our field and share Woolly’s vision for a socially just world.

In the 2022–2023 season, we have selected and collaborated with Gethsemane Herron, Justin Weaks, Vivian Barnes, and Jenn Kidwell as artists for the Weissberg Commissions.

Woolly Mammoth x BLACK LIST

In 2022, The Black List and Woolly began a partnership for a playwriting commission in which a selected artist will receive a $10,000 grant for the commission of a new play.  The 2023 recipient of the Commission will be announced soon.

PAST COMMISSIONS

Even before the launch of our commissioning program, Woolly has given three full commissions and four completion commissions to playwrights thanks to our “Free the Beast!” fund.

These writers include Aaron Posner, whose STUPID FUCKING BIRD received the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play, and the Helen Hayes Award-winning Robert O’Hara, whose Woolly premiere BOOTYCANDY debuted in New York at Playwrights Horizons in the fall of 2014.

Other commissioned writers include Mia Chung, Nikkole Salter, Lisa D’Amour, Sheila Callaghan, and Gregory S. Moss.
